Hall runners putting Spring Valley on the map

Ryan Schekel likely didn't know where Spring Valley, Ill. was on the map four years ago. That all changed when Hall High School's Mike Miroux decided to attend Mount Mercy University and run for Scheckel's Mustangs cross country and track teams.

Snow day!

A few weeks ago after our first measurable snow of the year, my husband and I were walking home from the bank. We had just signed some pretty major documents. Feeling a bit overwhelmed from doing the grown-up things in life, I heard it ... kids laughing, screaming, yelling. They were playing on a snow pile.

Negro Creek: Aren’t we forgetting something?

There has been a lot written about the controversy relating to the potential name change of Negro Creek. The most surprising aspect, for me, has been the curious passion of those who defend the creek’s name as though it were a source of local pride. I just don’t have it in me to relive the entire restaurant saga, but let’s just say I couldn’t have chosen a worse place to relax and let the woes of the world vanish.

Allen Layton went in for hernia surgery after Thanksgiving and came out facing Stage 2 lymphoma.

Big catch in South Dakota

What does some Bureau County ice fishermen do when they can’t find any ice to fish on in Bureau County? This is the problem that Carl Lund, Scott Hilmes and Brett Kloepping faced this winter. How did they handle it? They decided to drive north to find some ice.

The Seven Wonders of ... Milo

You might have noticed my brother, Milo, doesn’t get mentioned much in my columns. He is an in-the-background kind of kid. In honor of his 10th birthday, I wanted to write a column with a bit of help from him.
