Mendota to play for 2A title

The Mendota Trojans have played themselves into Friday’s regional finals at Somonauk, defeating the host Bobcats 59-44 Wednesday. The big upset of the night saw No. 4 Plano knock off top-seeded Aurora Christian 65-57.

At Sterling

Newman 63, LaMoille/Ohio 22: Tim Wilson (23 points) and the host Comets overpowered the Lions in regional play Tuesday. Jordan Farmer and Mitchell Barker each had seven points for the Lions (2-25).

Newman's starters played the first few minutes of the second half, opening the third quarter on a 10-0 run before the first five Comets went to the bench for good. Newman led 53-14 after three quarters, having forced 28 turnovers and holding the Lions to 6-for-25 (24 percent) shooting from the field – including 0-for-8 from three-point range.

Wilson scored his 23 points on 11-for-12 shooting, and also added four steals and four rebounds.

"These are the last home games for the seniors and coach told us to go out and have fun. We weren't nervous at all; we just went out and played our game, and it worked out really well for us tonight," Wilson said.

Newman (18-10) advances to Thursday's semifinals against Indian Creek, which beat Paw Paw 73-52. No. 1 Erie (23-7) topped No. 5 AFC to vault into Friday's finals.

LaMoille's Barker advanced in the Three-Point Showdown.

At Streator

Henry/Senachwine 68, DePue 28: The Mallards moved on behind Jeff Miller (23 points) and Chris Lewis (14). Isaac Reyes led DePue (1-20) with eight points and Jesse Lopez had six.

Reyes and Henry's Danny Meyers and Miller advanced in the Three-Point Showdown.

Thursday's semifinals at the Woodland Regional pit No. 1 Midland (15-11) vs. No. 5 Streator Woodland (9-20) at 6 p.m. followed by No. 2 Henry-Senachwine (16-13) vs. No. 3 Flanagan-Cornell (10-17).

Junior college

IVCC 83, Carl Sandburg 64: Princeton's Michael Murray scored a game-high 23 points with 11 rebounds to lead the Eagles to victory Tuesday in Galesburg. Alec Schwab (St. Bede) had 11 points and Billy Gaull (Hall) added eight.
