South Storm rises for BVEC crown

Bureau Valley South lived up to its top-billing in the BVEC girls’ basketball tournament, but they had to go through sister school North to do it.

The 2012 BVEC finals proved to be a battle of the Storm with BV South defeating BV North 25-15 for the top prize. South was the No. 1 seed; North was No. 2.

South, which held North to six points through three quarters (15-6), got seven points each from Savannah Dean and Savanna Bell. Savanna Brunoehler added five points, Samantha Stocking four and Danielle Carr two.

The South Storm finished the season at 13-6, going 9-0 in BVEC games.

For North (14-2), Darcey Kepner had nine points, Sidney Kolb four and Abbey Howes and Ashley Phillips two each.

Host Bradford beat Ohio for third-place 37-25.

In semifinal action, North beat Bradford 26-20. Darcey Kepner had 12 points, and Kolb had eight. Kepner also had 18 points in an opening 38-8 win over DePue.

Volleyball

SRC Tournament: Princeton Logan settled for two fourth-place finishes in Thursday’s finals of the Starved Rock Conference finals at Spring Valley JFK. The Logan seventh grade came in seeded fourth and finished fourth, falling to No. 3 Mendota 25-18, 25-23. Logan fell to Ottawa 25-19, 25-19 in the eighth-grade, third-place match. Peru Parkside swept the SRC championships over Streator in both matches.

At Princeton: The Cherry Comets took two matches at Princeton Christian Academy Thursday. Cherry took the seventh-grade match 25-22, 25-4 with Abby Hoscheid serving for seven points and Mariah Burgin, Hunter Galassi and Rachael Kobold four each. In the eighth grade, Jenna Lusietto had 15 points and Alexis Schmitt and Abby Hoscheid eight each in a 25-9, 25-11 Cherry victory.
