MANLIUS — The Bureau County Sheriff’s Department responded to an incident at Bureau Valley High School about 7:45 a.m. Wednesday.

Superintendent John Bute said there was a “one-sided altercation” between Acting Principal Eric Lawson and an 18-year-old male student during breakfast before classes had started.

Bute could not comment on the details of the incident, but said Lawson was protecting himself and the other students present.

Bute said the sheriff’s department was notified, and deputies removed the student from the
premises.

On Friday, Lt. Investigator Randy Hasbrook said John W. Owen, 18, of Bradford was charged with battery following the incident.

A student disciplinary board hearing is pending at the district.
