Memorable moments on the hardwood
There’s been some memorable moments of late on the hardwood at all levels.
The 37 points put in by Princeton senior Jacob Fisher at Bureau Valley on Feb. 7 is the most ever scored at the Storm Cellar, friend or foe. Fisher poured in 20 points alone in the fourth quarter to lead the Tigers to a 78-68 win.
Alec Schwab scorched the nets at IVCC Tuesday, tallying 49 points to lead the Eagles past Sauk Valley 82-79. The St. Bede product’s performance ranks among the top four in school history.
Hollis Vickery, the LaSalle-Peru High School varsity girls coach, holds the school record with 59 points in 1977. The only other IVCC cagers to top Schwab’s outing are Terrone Parham, 55 in 1993, and George Pohl, 55 for LPO JC in 1960. Jimmy Mini, another former St Bede Bruin great, scored 48 for LPO at the 1959 NJCAA tournament in Hutchinson, Kan.
Annawan’s Celina VanHyfte, just a sophomore, went over the 1,000-point mark for her career with two years to go. Her mother, Val (Wancket) VanHyfte, is the 18th all-time leading scorers in the state out of Atkinson with 2,644 points.
Putnam County senior Jake Sale hit the 1,000-point mark exactly with a third-quarter 3-pointer, his final points in Friday’s win over Putnam County.
Princeton senior Jasmine Kunkel joined the 1,000-point club with three points to spare, scoring 18 points in her final regional game against St. Bede at regional. With 1,003, she stands fourth overall, following Tiah Romagnoli (1996-99) at 1,506, Brooke Jensen (2003-07) at 1,283 and Tina Forth (1988-91) at 1,029.
Streator senior J.J. Cravatta went off for 44 points last week vs. PC. He’s the Streator all-time leading scorer with more than 1,800 points. Kevin Missel of Reagansports.com notes Cravatta, who has played in 103 varsity games, could have his freshmen and sophomore tallies taken away, and he’d still be No. 1. He has exactly 600 more points than No. 2 Don Morris.
