Have you noticed? When I leave work around 5 p.m., there is still a glimmer of daylight in the western sky. That’s right! The days are getting a bit longer. It won’t be long now ... Daylight Saving Time begins March 11 — just a little more than a month away. Yee-ha!

I hope you’re enjoying our Progress editions. In the first two editions (published Jan. 14 and Jan. 21), we asked area junior high students to interview someone 50 years old or older. In their interview, we wanted them to ask their subject about progress — both good and not-so-good — that they’ve seen in their lifetimes. Wow! These kids, the people they interviewed and their teachers really delivered. If you didn’t get a chance to read these wonderful interviews, you’ll want to carve out some time to do so.

This Saturday, our third and final section of our Progress edition features local high school students, who we asked to speak about progress — the good and the not-so-good — in their lifetimes. I was so impressed with their insight, their words. I think you will be too. Watch for the last Progress edition in Saturday’s newspaper.

I spent some time this past weekend with some friends photographing eagles on the Illinois River. If you want to get a glimpse of these magnificent birds, there are plenty of spots in and around Bureau County to do so. Besides the Illinois River, I’m hearing you can see plenty of eagles at Lake DePue, the Hennepin Canal and even Lake Rawson in Bureau. Of course, anywhere along the Mississippi River is a prime place too. We saw plenty on our excursion, along with lots of deer, wild turkeys and more. Bureau County is full of Mother Nature’s bounty ... Enjoy!
